Walk with the Master
"Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also." John 15:20-23
In today's text, Jesus speaks of witnessing and its significance for believers and nonbelievers. Today's verses reflect the importance of our role as Christ's messengers and the responsibility that comes with it. Jesus begins by emphasizing the shared experience of persecution. He reminds His disciples that if the world persecuted Him—their Master—it will also persecute them. As we have seen in John 15, this reality reminds us that our walk with the Master often includes challenges and opposition.
The passage emphasizes the power of witnessing and sharing the gospel. Jesus tells his disciples, "If they kept my word, they will also keep yours." Our testimonies, with the power of the Holy Spirit, have the potential to touch hearts and transform lives. As the Apostle Paul wrote,
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." Romans 10:17
Jesus also explains that those who reject Him are accountable for their rejection because they have heard His message. His coming and teaching have removed any excuse for their sin. Additionally, Jesus reveals that those who hate Him also hate the Father. Rejecting Christ is not merely a matter of personal preference but has eternal implications. Our response to Jesus reflects our relationship with God the Father.
Dear Church, as we reflect on today's passage, let us embrace our role as bearers of the gospel, sharing Christ's message with love and conviction. As we do so, we become instruments of God's grace, knowing that some will accept the good news and find salvation.
May the joy of the Lord be your strength today as you walk with the Master.
